The Birthday Blues: Cohen's Update

This time last year I was preparing for the arrival of my sweet number five.  It was a rough ending to an already difficult pregnancy so I was more than excited for our due date.  I can't believe how fast time as gone by,  but what is even more unbelievable to me is what it has taken to get here.  My poor little guy has had a very rough start to his beautiful little life and it has been so difficult to watch him go through so much pain.

Before his FPIES diagnosis he had several hospital stays that were filled with needles, tubes, and countless tests.  I never dreamed that this little bundle of joy would experience so much discomfort in his first year of life.  We are so very thankful for the blessings that we can celebrate with him and that he is growing well despite what he has been through; but that doesn't take away some of this disappointments that come with his disease.

I have celebrated 4 first birthdays, all of them with so much excitement and of course that famous picture with little cake filled hands and icing mustaches.  There is just something about seeing babies tear into that first confectionery delight,  which seems to have become a type of  passage into toddler-hood.  I guess that's why I have so much sadness when I think about this special day.  I am only human and I can't help but find my mind often dwelling on the things that my little guy can't do...one of which is EAT...so obviously that means no cake diving baby pictures for our little scrap book!

I know that my sweet boy won't miss it....but his mama will!

You right!  It isn't the end of the world.... and yes I am very blessed to even have a little one to celebrate with, but just for a moment I need to be sad.... just for a moment I am going to let myself morn the loss of that image of a baby becoming a cake diving one year old.... just for a moment I am going to let myself be mad that my child doesn't live a "normal life".

I really haven't been able to bring myself to think about that special day in detail, in fact I can feel myself become anxious when I think about it.  I am sure if my little man could talk he would tell me that the greatest gift I could give him right now would be to make him feel better.   So for now,  instead of planning a big day filled with festivities we are planning a hospital stay full of needles, tubes, tests and surgery.

I promise I won't let myself linger in this rut of sorrows or keep my focus on all of the negatives for to much longer.  Perhaps as early as tomorrow I will once again see the silver linings that hoover around me.... but for right now in this single moment...

I am sad

A Decade plus 1

I lived many years before I figured out my purpose in life....and then one day I reached the place in my journey when everything finally made sense...  August 28, 2002 I became a mother.

I won't pretend that it has always been easy but I couldn't imagine my life any other way!  If you asked me eleven years ago what motherhood would be like I would have probably have given you a first time parents view of a uncertain world.

But my experiences thus far have taught me many things...
~ crying babies eventually stop crying,
~ bruises don't always mean concussions,
               ~ teething eventually ends,
~ children aren't perfect but your love for them should be
~ discipline may change behavior but discipleship changes hearts
~ not all kids sleep through the night,
~ children develop at their own rate....without regard to what the books say
~ little ones have minds of their own,
~ all children are gifted at something,
~ your comparisons to others are never accurate
~your children won't always like you...and vise verse
~ mistakes are always accompanied by apologies... this goes for the children too
~ children have no regard for TIME,                                ~ life looks a lot more beautiful through little eyes,
                                         ~ flexibility breads enjoy-ability
~ nothing replaces pleases and thank yous,                                   ~ little hands make mighty big messes,
~ just-a-minutes never take only one minute,
~ in a blink of an eye today will turn into yesterday
~ little hearts quickly grow regardless of how much love they are filled with... so we must not waste a single opportunity
~ Mommies and Daddies only get one chance to get it right!

But most importantly I have learned that I must cherish every moment that I am privileged enough to have with these beautiful blessing from above

Thank you sweet boy for challenging  me daily to be a better mother tomorrow then I was today.

Happy Birthday Todd Christopher
I love you to the moon and back again!

Reflections of the Shadows

It is so easy to only focus my reflections on the peeks in my life, the times when all is well and life is easy.  It is far more enjoyable to pretend that nothing bad ever happens and that my road to the present has only been filled with smiles and giggles.  But if I don't take the time to record the valleys I will miss out on being able to fully appreciate those coveted peeks... the times when the sun shines brightly on my little world.

It isn't easy moving through these present days but I get to make a choice....either sercome to my circumstance or fight through giving the best of me to those that count on it most.

Recently, there have been many disappointments that I have had to accept but each one has helped me realize something... I have been trying to get through this alone.  After repetitively asking God to change the situation, it finally hit me....maybe it isn't the situation that needs to change....maybe it is ME.

I want to be the person that God has created me to be, but first I must remain fully surrendered to His will. What if this bump in my road is SUPPOSE to be here.... perhaps it isn't so much a challenge as it is an opportunity to mold me back into the shape I was intended to be.  This world has a way of chiseling away my heavenly shape and leaving me looking different than God had intended.  I will choose to feel the pain of being reshaped once again... so I won't miss out on what God has planned.

Now... I am praying for a change in ME and that I will have strength to take on each day no matter what it holds.  I hope that every shadow in my life brings me closer to God and that I embrace each as an opportunity to become the beautiful creation that HE envisioned when he breathed life into me.

"God meets you where you are but never leaves you there" Rev. Jack Graham

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Standing In Rough Waves

We are a beach loving family, we count down the days until we get to enjoy that beautiful big ocean.  I even love the feel of sand and don't mind the clean up that comes with it.

There are times when I leave the beach and venture into the water, sometimes it relaxes me, cools me off and provides joy.... but other times the waves change and I find myself unable to keep my balance.  When the water is rough it begins to take a toll on me, I try to stand but I am repeatably knocked over and under.  I struggle and fight to regain my balance and continue towards the safety of the beach in front of me but exhaustion begins to set in, I know that I have to dig deeper and find more strength to continue forward.

No matter how much I want to change the situation I can't because I can't change the force of the waves against me.  I know that I just have to keep fighting them off and get back up each time they tumble me over.  Eventually, I make it to the shore tired and out of breath.

But not once in my exhaustion do I ever curse the ocean or find myself any less in love with it and it's beauty.  My experience won't keep me from returning to the waves that took such a toll on me, even though I realize that it may once again knock me over and pull me under.

It may seem to make more sense to just never go back into the water so that I wouldn't have to endure that struggle ever again; but doing so would also cost me the opportunity to experience the joy that comes from something that I love so dearly.
Although I am hundreds of miles from the ocean I find myself feeling as if I am trying to stand in rough waves, battling my way back to the safety of the beach.  I know I will get there... but right now I am exhausted by the beating of water that I so dearly love.  I long for the rest that comes from the security of the dry land.

But despite it all I am no less in love with my life nor would I change it... I will continue to fight to keep my feet under me and my eyes focused forward on all that provides me strength and peace.

Isaiah 40:31  but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles;  they will run and not grow weary,  they will walk and not be faint.

When has your child been on too much medication....

Today while we were working on our Grammar lesson my daughter reminded me that our road of illness has been a long one.

We spend a lot of time trying to keep Asthma at bay in our house.  Unfortunately, that means we frequent our doctors office and have had to administer more medicines than I care to mention.  So it feels good when we get a chance to find humor in our circumstance.

It is always interesting to hear my children's responses to my "school" questions, but their answers today left me in stitches...and painfully aware that my children have had far more than their share of illnesses.

We were reviewing singular and plural articles and when I asked my oldest two to recall what "singular" was.... my oldest butterfly replied, "Hum.... medicine?"

We spent the next few minutes laughing to the point of tears.  If you are familiar with allergies you know that what she was referring to was, Singulair [sin-gu-lair].  This is a medication that she was on at one time but had to go off of it because of side effects.

I can't decide which I should be more concerned about, the fact that my sweet butterfly can't recall what a singular article is or that she has been on so many different medication that she could make this mistake?????

None the less it sure feels good to laugh!!!

Living in a FPIES Fog

When you live in the world of FPIES you live in a fog of uncertainty, it makes no difference whether it is your first child or you’re fifth.  This illness changes all the rules leaving parents only to guess, and second guess every aspect of caring for their children.  Seemingly natural decisions become painstaking for the parent of a child with FPIES.  Because trigger foods can be different for every child it is almost impossible to predict reactions.  Some children react from a single exposure and some after many... some have only one trigger while others have no safe foods at all… some have chronic reactions, some have acute while others have both.....

We have to sort through the everyday things to figure out what is a reaction and what is a baby simply being a baby.  Sometimes babies cry just because they are tired, sometimes baby spit up for no reason, sometimes babies have odd diapers or get viruses.  But IF those babies have FPIES then all of those symptoms could mean the beginning of painful reactions to the foods they have ingested.  So it is up to us parents to sort through it all and care for these special little ones... desperately trying to minimize as much pain as possible.   We walk a fine line, teetering between over reacting and under reacting to our little ones needs.

When and what we feed our children become crucial decisions that could have costly consequences.  It is as if we are walking through a mine field while wearing a blind fold.  We learn to trust our instincts because that's all we have to give as protection for our little ones.  And sometimes that isn't enough!

So before you judge us please understand something..... it may seem like we are over reacting to a little spit up, frantic over a seemingly harmless crumb on the floor, obsessed with our infants bowel movements or overly concerned about a crying infant.  But what you don't know is that we have spent sleepless nights caring for a child that is hurting so badly that they can't rest, we have watched a crumb turn our little ones insides out, and held a limp and listless little body in our arms...

We desperately try to blindly navigate through the Fog of FPIES the best way we know how, but there are no rules, no guidelines for us to turn to or steer us through this journey.  We count mostly on the encouragement and experiences of others that have walked this path and we seek comfort in our small numbers.

So many have worked extremely hard this year to help create managed care for FPIES.  Public awareness is crucial!  Recognition will enable us to bring light to this illness, opening up opportunities to develop research so we can begin to lift the fog and give our little ones a brighter tomorrow.

The Heart of a Bullfrog

My biggest bullfrog has such a sweet heart and I am so proud of the way that he freely shares it with others.  I have learned so much from his tender ways and I couldn't be prouder of him.

The other day while he was out playing with his friends the boys began to discuss their future careers.
"I want to be in the Air Force", he said proudly.  "Really aren't you afraid of dying?" they asked him. "No because God is in control!"  One of the boys expressed his confusion, "You mean God controls stuff like that?",  "Well don't you think that if God can handle creating the universe and all that is in it then he can handle my life just fine?" said my little bullfrog.  "Wow, I didn't realize that...pretty cool!",  his friend responded.

We should all be so bold and excited to share with our friends that our God is amazing and quite capable of pretty incredible things.  My biggest bullfrog is a wonderful example to me of how we should't keep God's love to ourselves.  As adults we tend to live in a jaded world, forgetting that we have a job to do...we MUST let other's know that they were created for so much more than what they are experiencing.  This world is not the end, it is only the means to an end... A place to prepare us for our real home.

Loneliness, frustration, anger, and hurt...don't exist where we are going.  They live only on this side of heaven and will remain here long after we are gone.  We can't let ourselves be destroyed by them and we have a responsibility to others to help them break free as well.

So in the words of my wise little bullfrog, "Don't you think if God can handle creating the universe and all that is in it then he can handle (your) life just fine?"

“It is about the greatness of God, not the significance of man. God made man small and the universe big to say something about himself.”

— John Pipe
